STATE OF THE HOSPITAL: A weekly update from David H. Seagraves, President and CEO of Sumter Regional Hospital
Posted 09/21/2007
— Thank you, Americus and Sumter County!

On Tuesday, an overwhelming majority of you who voted to continue the one percent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) through 2014. With an expected $3 million in projected revenues that will benefit Sumter Regional Hospital's rebuilding efforts, you have answered a very loud and clear “Yes!” to the question, “Should we rebuild our hospital?”

We appreciate your confidence and support, and vow to be good stewards of your resources.

Of course, we still face a funding gap of about $9 million even after already-approved insurance and government funding and the recently approved SPLOST funding, but, as I wrote last week, your support has value well beyond the $3 million we expect to receive in SPLOST funds. One message we have heard consistently from government agencies and the philanthropic community is that they want to see evidence of local community support before they will make a significant investment in our recovery effort. Your 7-1 vote in favor of the SPLOST gives us that and, I'm sure, will be immensely helpful to our efforts.

Your penny-on-a-dollar sacrifice today will help pave the way for a modern healthcare facility in the near future which will deliver the kind of quality healthcare you want and deserve in Americus!

On other hospital news fronts, all of the 357 COGIM units are now in place at Sumter Regional Hospital East. Having the entire shell of the facility constructed is a very satisfying accomplishment, and work is now underway on the hospital's roof assembly and interior. Plumbers, electricians and heating & air conditioning contractors are already hard at work to make sure SRH East opens in late fall as scheduled.

We expect to decide soon on an architectural firm to assist us in planning and designing the new, permanent hospital, with an eye toward breaking ground next year and opening in 2010. At the same time, we are reviewing proposals from demolition companies and hope to be in a position soon to announce plan specifics for razing the damaged buildings.
Again, both personally and on behalf of the entire Sumter Regional family, I thank you for your support on Tuesday. We greatly appreciate your being Community Minded — just like us.
