Leonard Pope already has made a name for himself as a former tight end at Americus High School, Georgia and now with the Arizona Cardinals. Now, he wants to give something back. Pope announced Tuesday that he wants to help rebuild his hometown, including Sumter Regional Hospital — where he was born — after it was damaged by tornadoes by hosting “Leonard Pope's All-Star Weekend” to benefit the hospital and the community June 15-16 in Americus. Among the other sports celebrities tentatively scheduled to attend are fellow Arizona Cardinal and ex-Florida State star Anquan Boldin, ex-Miller County, Georgia player and current New Orleans Saint Charles Grant, ex-Georgia Bulldog Danny Ware, who signed a free agent deal with San Diego, former Georgia standout and current Atlanta Falcon D.J. Shockley, Cuthbert native and ex-Georgia Star and current Carolina Panther Thomas Davis and former Bulldog and current St. Louis Ram Randy McMichael. Memories of the hospital after the tornado are what drives Pope to help.

“It was a disaster when I first came back,” Pope said. “We're all trying to make the best of it. It was intense and emotional when I was there, and we just want to do something to build the hospital back.”

There will be a charity golf tournament on the 15th at Southwestern Golf Links, with the cost for participating being $100 per person ($400 per team). Later that day at 7 p.m., a black tie charity dinner and silent auction, with tickets being $50 per person or $500 per table. Then, on June 16, at 2 p.m. at a charity basketball game will be held at South Georgia Tech between NFL players and their friends against Americus-Sumter and Southland legends.
There, local children can sign up for Pope's youth football camp held next year. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children (children under 5 years are free).
