Marketing & PR Update for Monday, October 22nd, 2007
Posted 10/22/2007
Thanks to all of you who made last week's Basketball Charity Game and 4th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk a HUGE success!  The basketball game was another nailbiter, and your All-Stars almost got a win against a very talented Lady Jets squad.  Please go and support those ladies and the Jets this season as they should both field competitive teams this season.

The weather for the walk was picture perfect, and we had more than 250 people turn out for the event!  We want to thank all of our participants, sponsors and volunteers for their assistance, and please give everyone in the Marketing & PR department a pat on the back because they all worked very hard to make these events a success.

You can still help raise funds for local breast cancer patients by purchasing the remaining shirts from this year's walk.  All shirts are $5 and we will sell them while supplies last.  You can pick up them up at Hospice, which is located at 126 E Furlow Street .  Also, I usually visit the Urgent Care center at least once each day and I will have shirts with me as well.

For more information, please call (229) 928-4000 and ask for the Marketing & PR dept.

The I.T. department is requesting that all employees who are currently using Verizon Wireless Internet cards please call Kyressence Stone at (229) 591-2586.  Verizon needs to have these cards returned to them, and Kyressence will come and pick them up when she is called.

You're Invited to Learn About CASA!
CASA needs people just like you to learn more about becoming a CASA volunteer.  This is not DFACS.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is a group of volunteers with an interest in helping abused or neglected children, ages newborn to 18.  You could be the voice for one of these children.  The ultimate goal of CASA is to ensure every child has a safe, permanent home as quickly as possible.

What is required?

Once you become a volunteer, you will attend 40 hours of training on the duties and responsibilities of a CASA volunteer.  Thirty of these hours are in a classroom-style environment learning how to interact with children and how to fill out reports, and ten hours are in the courtroom watching other CASA volunteers as they report their findings and make their recommendations to the Judge. This training can be scheduled at a time convenient to you.  CASA is only asking for a 1 year commitment and an average of only about 1 hour per week for you to assess the needs of your case child.

Please attend one of the following informational meetings to learn more about becoming a CASA Volunteer.

4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at the GSW Student Health Center.

7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at the GSW Student Health Center.

The Student Health Center can be found by taking the campus perimeter road and taking the first left turn just passed the bell tower.  The Student Health Center is on the right.  Parking is available in front and on the side of that building.

You may call 931-2784 for additional information about this program.

A child in our area is in need of a person like you to speak on his or her behalf.  Sumter Regional Hospital supports and encourages participation in this worthwhile volunteer program.

Did you know?

99 children in Georgia died from abuse and neglect in 2004.
Every 15 minutes in Georgia, a child is the victim of confirmed abuse or neglect.
In Georgia, 200 incidents of child abuse and neglect are reported daily.
In 2006, 136 children were served by CASA volunteers in the six counties of Lee, Macon, Schley, Stewart, Sumter and Webster.

More than 600 SRH Employees Met During The Employee Meetings (Posted March 6, 2007>
In an effort to alleviate rumors and fears of hospital personnel after last week's tornado, Sumter Regional Hospital held two sessions at Georgia Southwestern State University's Storm Dome Tuesday.

A total of approximately 600 employees attended both sessions combined, which is more than 85 percent of the hospital's 700-plus employees.

After an opening prayer, SRH President & CEO David Seagraves started by thanking everyone who helped immediately after last Thursday's tornado hit the hospital with full force as well as the aftermath since, including physicians who were both in the hospital and those who were not.

“We applaud each of you,” said Seagraves. “Not only those of you who were on duty, but to those who came in once the alert was sounded. Your efforts were nothing short of heroic.”

After giving employees information regarding communications (“the Americus Times-Recorder had a lot of information in today's newspaper and has been a good source of information”), Seagraves then went on to talk about the damage of the building and the tremendous challenge the hospital faces.

“Our first priority is to serve our patients in this community,” said Seagraves. He then went on to talk about the hospital's 50-bed tent hospital that is located in the employee parking lot across from the old building.

Seagraves said the facility, which already has an address of 151 Mayo St., will have ER capabilities as well, and that it will also have some radiological services and lab services.

“We may have a different setting, but we will have the same competent and wonderful staff caring for the healthcare needs of this community.”

He then went on to say that the current facility will open in the next few days, and that the hospital is exploring a more “permanent” temporary home until the old building is assessed.

One of the main things Seagraves wanted to do was to alleviate the fears of the employees after rumors about the hospital closing.

“The hospital is not going to close,” said Seagraves. “We face some significant challenges, but our intent is to come back stronger than ever. We expect to make payroll for the forseeable future and we will keep you updated as we get information from our insurance company and other agencies such as FEMA and GEMA. President Bush was here first-hand to witness the devastation, and others will hopefully support our cause as well.” He also stated that even though the building is uninhabitable at this point, some of the hospital staff is still working very hard.

“And for those of you who currently do not have a place to perform your duties at this current time, please continue to exhibit the community minded spirit SRH is known for by helping your family or your neighbor through these tough times.”

Finally, Seagraves answered questions that were already submitted by employees, and then he answered questions from the crowds, which included more than 500 at the first session and an additional 100-plus in the second session.

“We need your support more than ever, and we need the support from our community as well,” Seagraves said.
