AMERICUS— A gift of $50,000 will be a nice start for Sumter Regional Hospital, in its efforts to rebuild from the hit it took during the March 1 tornado. The donation of Wachovia Bank was made Tuesday at the old hospital parking lot on Mayo Street. Several Wachovia board members, as well as members of the hospital Foundation were on hand to accept the generous gift.

“We are very, very grateful,” said Nyla Franklin, executive director of the Sumter Regional Hospital Foundation.
“Wachovia has been the first to step up and say, ‘We want to help ... and get things started to get back to where they need to be.'” “We're very excited,” Franklin said.
Foundation members present for the check presentation were Dr. Gatewood Dudley, Billie Gatewood, Lara Gill and Chairman Brent Williams. “It's what we wanted to do with the money,” said Scott Rossman, Wachovia Americus market manager. “We wanted to use it to support this vital community organ.” Rossman added the donation was “ a great way to start off the rebuilding effort.”

“Our bank is glad to be a part of it, and we want to support the hospital,” Rossman said. He added, “We are committed to the Americus community and to doing whatever we can to help recover from such a devastating event.
“Sumter Regional Hospital is very important to this area, and we believe that our ability to contribute to its reconstruction is a priority and it is a part of our community-first philosophy.”

“Recovering will be a community effort,” said David Seagraves, Sumter Regional CEO and president. “Wachovia's generous gift is the first in many steps that this community will have to take. “We're grateful to have one of our local companies as a partner. This contribution serves a great jump-start to our fundraising efforts, and also confirms our belief that in a close-knit community like Americus, neighbors can count on each other to step up during hard times.” Seagraves added that Sumter Regional Hospital is “very, very thankful” for Wachovia's generous gift. He added the money will be helpful to perhaps the hospital's key challenge, rebuilding after the deadly tornado's mangling of the facility. Seagraves added that Wachovia's gift is the largest single donation the hospital has received since the tornado.
